My View on Education in Nigeria
Right from when I was I primary school, I have always hear the popular saying that "Education is the Best Legacy".
Coming to think of the situation here in this part of the world, we are just going to school to acquire a certificate and not the knowledge as the system had actually refused to teach us what is actually needed to survive in the large world.
The system taught me to pass exam in every possible way but do not get caught up in any strange act.
The most frustrating part is that after writing WAEC about 3 times and eventually ended up passing it, we are faced with another situation with JAMB which is a major criteria in getting to higher institution here in my country.
After going through all this and eventually gotten admission into school, I have to be in the CPF( Cram Pass Forget) class of people as the system is not interested in the getting to know what I know but rather the system is designed to test my memory. So why do I need to stress myself saying I want to graduate with the best result knowing fully well that in this part of the world it is not what you study that matters, it is actually who you know.
I came across a situation where a graduate of Petrochemical Engineer is working as a front desk officer in a bank. Are you telling me it is the certificate he got from the school he finished from is what got him the Job? No, lets not deceive ourselves. We need to actually put so many things in place if we really need to move our educational system forward.
I observed that not all of us are capable of reading and passing, the system of education in this country needs to be revisited and some amendment made to it. No one is actually dull but the problem is that we understand things at different rate.
I think a system should be put in place where students who fails exams are examined to know that the problem is. Sometimes, it is not because the student did not read that made them to fail, it is sometimes the teachers method of teaching. Other times, it is the problem of writing down what you actually know against what the teacher has actually taught.
Some times, some student finds it difficult to put down what they know. I remember during my days in the College, I used to have a friend whom when called to explain anything the teacher has taught, he can actually explain it and even sometimes better than the teacher, but the problem he has is that he won't be able to put it down into writing.
I belief if an oral examination system can be put in place to help these sets of people, it would actually help reduced some frustrations these people faced.
Another thing we can do is to make screening for teachers to be thorough and not just the conventional system of who you know as that system ahs actually killed our educational system to a very large extent.
This is just my personal view of this topic.
Feel free to add yours.
